Online Shopping gives you the pleasure to shop products and services right from you home with the help of just a few clicks. Lots of stuff can be bought cheaper from an online retailer and comparing prices is as easy as a click of a button. Online shops may also have products that are either sold out or not available in local shops. Even though online shopping seems to be very convenient and easy to use, it has its disadvantages. Still there are lots of risk factors involved in online transactions through credit/debit cards, online banking etc. Your card details and account info can be misused if you are using an unsecured or malware effected PC for online transactions, technical fault in payment gateway or e-commerce site may lead to failed transaction and yet your card or bank account may be charged for the item. You cannot physically check the product before buying and blindly rely on online sellers reputation.

“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.”
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) or the Stop error is the most infamous catastrophic Windows error ever. It is generally caused by faulty device drivers(software) or hardware failure. Most Windows PC users have faced this problem every once in a while and in most situations users try to fix the problem by reformatting and reinstalling the Operating System (OS). But this fix doesn’t work always. Here I am providing a comprehensive list of steps to fix BSOD.

Step 1: BSOD is occurring randomly or you can reproduce the error in specific situations.

Try to submit the error to Microsoft and check if a possible solution and cause for the error is provided or not. Update all device drivers (graphics, chipset etc) to latest and stable versions. Uninstall any recent software that you are suspecting is a cause of BSOD. Check Event Viewer logs to see the error details or try Blue screen Viewer from Nirsoft. Test your hard disk drive for errors, you can use SeaTools for DOS (also works on non Seagate HDDs) or any other bootable Disk diagnosis tool. If all fails then try the classic approach to fix Windows, yes by a boot cd (check Step 3).

Step 2: The computer just abruptly restarting and showing BSOD error message.
Try to boot into safe mode (by pressing F8 during Start up) and try the solutions mentioned in Step 1.

Step 3: Use boot CD to Repair or Reinstall OS.
When you can’t do troubleshooting from your running Windows environment, you need a boot cd or live cd to do further troubleshooting. Try Ultimate Boot CD or use your Windows setup disc to boot and repair your current windows installation or do a fresh installation.

Step 4: Hardware Troubleshooting.
If all the above solutions fails to solve your BSOD then it may caused by hardware fault or device malfunction. Check your RAM first. Use Memtest86+ to test your RAM modules. Try to clean the modules and socket, you can use rubber to clean dust and other unwanted substances from the conductive pins of the modules and socket, then reseat the RAM modules. If RAM is not the culprit then check the Disk Drive (HDD,SSD etc), PSU, internal cables, add-on cards or any visible sign of damage to the motherboard. If you have doubt about a particular hardware device then simply swap it by a new tested one or try it on another working machine.

Still getting BSOD?
Just leave a comment describing your situation and I will definitely try to help ASAP, also try Tom's Hardware Forums.

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-53834562945963233242010-07-10T00:45:00.006+05:302010-07-10T01:38:25.047+05:30The Downfall of Seagate Hard Disk Drives
Seagate was once one of the most reputed and trusted brand for hard disk drives (HDD). Seagate HDDs were both fast and reliable. I myself have trusted and recommended the brand for years. But ever since their notorious firmware problem with the Barracuda 7200.11 series, which prevents the HDD to be detected by system BIOS, I have lost my faith in Seagate. Although there are four major bugs
in the firmware of 7200.11 family, this one affected a large number of users. At first Seagate refused to acknowledge this as a major issue and heavily moderated its official forum where large number of people reported this problem. Then they released firmware updates and later also offered free data recovery service for drives affected with this firmware issue. The brand reputation was heavily hit and loyal customers moved to other brands like Western Digital (WD). Then came the all new Barracuda 7200.12 family. Although this series of HDDs have no major firmware issues, they were highly unreliable and have high failure rates compared to other brands.

Just check the customer reviews in Newegg.com (Popular online retailer) of Seagate HDDs compared to other brands such as WD.

Seagate has 55% reviews as Excellent and 22% reviews as Very Poor. If we go by these numbers then there is almost a fifty-fifty chance that your Seagate HDD is gonna die.

Here you can see customers reviews of WD Caviar Blue (similar functionality and price as Seagate Barracuda 7200.12) with 70% Excellent and just 9% as Very Poor. Although the number of reviews is a lot lesser than Seagate, but still nowadays WD seems to be more reliable than Seagate.
Also Seagate has now reduced their warranty from 5 years to 3 years. But other manufacturers have also reduced warranty to 3 years as a cost cutting measure. Still WD offers its Caviar Black series with 5 years of warranty, but its costlier and targeted to high end users.

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-87221992821022585622010-01-19T16:15:00.001+05:302010-01-19T20:29:36.265+05:30Bingle – Check Bing and Google Search Results Side by Side

Bingle is a nice tool to compare search results of Bing and Google. You will notice a huge difference between Bing and Google Search results in lots of search queries.
If you are a subscriber of Airtel mobile and got a GPRS enabled phone then you are eligible to browse and use http://www.google.co.in for free. You can also connect your phone as modem and browse Google India in PC. All you need is the Opera browser, since Airtel is blocking other browser user-agents to access their service. The handset settings to browse this service is same as Airtel Live settings.
Both PC and mobile settings are given bellow.

Access Point Name (APN)

Proxy address

Port

airtelfun.com

100.1.200.99

8080

For mobile browsing use your default browser not opera mini and configure your mobile with the above settings (Airtel Live Settings). As for Browsing in PC, connect your phone as modem to PC using “airtelfun.com” APN, after that you have to configure proxy settings of Opera, that is Tools>Preferences…>Advanced>Network>Proxy Servers> tick HTTP and HTTPS, then enter the above proxy address and port number and after that you are ready to use Google Search and lots of other Google India services for free.

List of useful Google India services other than Google Search:

1. http://www.google.co.in/news
2. http://www.google.co.in/movies
3. http://www.google.co.in/maps
4. http://www.google.co.in/books

Airtel impose data charge if the subscriber is browsing any website that is not under google.co.in or Airtel Live wap portal domain. So try it at your own risk don't blame me.

MediaCodeSpeedEdit(MCSE) a software that allows you to change/edit the read and write speed of your DVD Writer by modifying your DVD-Drive firmware. You just have to load the firmware of your drive then MCSE will show you the available options for your drive that you can modify, like RPC1 patch, Read speed, Bitsetting etc.

RPC1 patch: Patches your RPC2 DVD drive Firmware to RPC1 or Region Code free at Drive level.

Read Speed: Increase or Decrease your drive read speed, by increasing read speed coping files from disc will be faster, but not suitable for certain drives like for my old a retired ASUS 1608P3S.

Bitsetting: Useful when burning DVD+R media, because using bitsetting DVD+R media book type can be set as DVD-ROM, which is useful incase of playback compatibility issues on old DVD Players/ROMs.

Change write speed: For example incase of your drive media code SONY16D1 supports 16x speed for burning and SONY08D1 media supports 12x speed for burning, then you can replace SONY08D1’s write strategy with SONY16D1, just double click SONY08D1 then a pop up window will appear where you can choose the media code SONY16D1 to replace the write strategy of SONY08D1. Remember you can only replace write strategy of same type of media like DVD-RW to DVD-RW, DVD+R to DVD+R etc, also changing write strategy will increase the chances of burn process failing and hence increases the chances of making coasters. It’s recommended when replacing write strategies try to choose same manufacturer media code for optimal write performance.

Note that all options may not be available for your drive, because of limited number of supported manufactures, also don’t forget that if you are going to apply the modified Firmware to your drive then your warranty will be void, so do it at your own risk.
Gif animation is widely used in web animations, user avatars, smileys etc.

This guide will help you to create custom gif animations from slides of still pictures or video using GIMP and VirtualDub.

Creating Gifs using still pictures

Step 1
Open GIMP->then open the stills in GIMP using Open as Layers… option from File [Ctrl+Alt+O] and then browse and select the image files to be opened, click open.

Step 2

Press Ctrl+L to open the Layers window for viewing and applying delay to the slides/layers of images. This delay is the duration of time for which the layer will be displayed and after that next layer will be displayed.

Just right click each layer and then click Edit Layer Attributes… to enter a delay value.
e.g. if you wish to have a delay time of 500ms then enter it in this format (500ms) as Layer name.
Step 3

To preview the animation click Filters from GIMP menu bar, then select Animation->click Playback.

Now to save the animation click File->Save as->then give a file name of your choice and .gif as the extension name->click Save->select Save as Animation->then click Export->Save.

Creating Gif from Video

Step 1

Open VirtualDub->click File->Open a video file->then browse and select a video file, then click open to open it.

Step 2

To save the whole video as Gif animation click File->Export->Animated GIF.

* Saving a whole video as gif is not a good idea if the video is of long duration (greater than 2 min), because it require more time and storage space to encode and save the video as gif. So its better to choose a selection of video for exporting into gif animation.

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-45319462398120475602008-09-18T11:13:00.001+05:302008-09-22T01:31:48.299+05:30Nokia Monitor Test - Tweak your monitor and get sharpest possible display

Nokia Monitor Test the ultimate monitor calibration tool to tweak any type monitors and have the best possible display configuration. Bush biography page to number 1 position among other all results.

Though at present many of these so called bombs are not available in search results.

I just thought to explore some more in this bombing aspect and all of a sudden decided to search for query “best search engine“ using Google search.

Guess what I got in the results…

As you can see Google Search isn’t visible in the results page, except something mentioning “Best US Shopping Search Engine Winner: Google's Froogle” and “www.dogpile.com” appeared in the top of all results.

Seeing these search results motivated me to search some more queries related to “best search engine”.

Look what I found….

Search Query “top search engine”

Once again “www.dogpile.com” appeared in top 3 and still no mention of “www.google.com”. Though two websites got the term Google.

Search Query “web search”

At last in this query “www.google.com” was visible, though in the 10th position…….

Once again “www.dogpile.com” was in the top.

Search Query “online search”

In this query AOL Search is the topper. I think that’s because AOL was formerly called America Online, Inc. and Google thinks it is what I am after.

In the end the tagline I got is “Google is too shy to show himself as best search engine in its own search results”.

I got these results because Google generally don’t manually modify it’s search results [visibility of a site in search results depend on their pagerank and some other criteria defined by Google].

So I hope I got something new similar to Google Bombs…….

Google Gags may be….

You may also try some more queries like “ultimate search engine”, “search engine”, “top 10 search engines” etc.

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-18081501551965560912008-08-21T17:21:00.001+05:302008-08-21T20:04:01.134+05:30EyeDefender – avoid eyestrain and prevent Computer Vision Syndrome

EyeDefender is a freeware which can protect your eyes from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

CVS is a temporary condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer display for protracted, uninterrupted periods of time. Its simply cheats the BitTorrent protocol, allowing it's users to download like a selfish giant. You may get better download speed with BitThief on well seeded torrents and slow internet connection (you will be able to use your full bandwidth for download), though just imagine if everybody starts using BitThief then the torrent itself will be dead.

BitThief poses a great threat to BitTorrent Peer 2 Peer (P2P) file sharing and can be considered as a torrent leeching client software. The point raised by the developers of BitThief is “We argue that the BitTorrent protocol has to be modified in order to effectively prevent selfishness.”

BitTyrant another torrent client similar to BitThief, though BitTyrant do seed, but only to the peers having high upload speeds.

Download BitThief

To use BitThief you must have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed, because BitThief is Cross-platform and written in Java.

Get latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-90446739895123903662008-08-05T10:36:00.001+05:302008-08-17T10:46:24.806+05:30ZSoft Uninstaller - Uninstall programs with ease

Do you ever faced, that you’re unable to uninstall certain programs from Windows Add or Remove Programs options? Or you have uninstalled the program though it’s uninstall entry is still present in Add or Remove Programs.

The main causes of these errors are damaged installations or software bugs in the programs.

Many of us have faced these problems. There is one easy solution available to this problem, ZSoft Uninstaller allows you to easily uninstall programs and works as an alternative to Windows Add or Remove Programs option. You can also delete left over uninstall entries using this program.

If you are unable to uninstall a program, then just manually delete the files of that program from your HDD (generally from C:\Program Files) and then use Zsoft Uninstaller to remove the uninstall entry.

The main features or ZSoft Uninstaller are following:

Search (search the list of installed software)

Delete entry's from programs that is no longer installed

Automatically find entry's from programs that are most likely already uninstalled

Hide entries from the list that you are never going to uninstall (Windows updates etc.) making the list smaller and therefore easier to manage.

Automatically find entry's that are considered "crap-ware"

Export the current list to a TXT file

Show more information than available though add/remove

Find and delete temporary files

Analyse an installation so it can be completely uninstalled

Click here to download ZSoft Unistaller for free.

Click here to view ZSoft homepage (incase the above link changed/dead or you want to try other programs from ZSoft).

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-72547892737309448362008-08-02T02:06:00.001+05:302008-08-17T23:47:40.155+05:30.kkrieger the 96K free first person shooter game

.kkrieger is just 96KB in file size, though its a good and free alternative to other first person shooter games like Serious Sam which eats lots of MBs of your hard disk space. This allows you to save your current working session without closing a running program or file. Then you can resume that session anytime when you start your PC. It’s somewhat like the stand by mode of Windows. Though stand by mode requires power, so we can’t unplug the PC from power because doing so may result in data loss and the user will not be able to resume the session. Hibernation doesn’t require any power and uses the hard disk drive to store entire RAM contents. So how much disk space will hibernation eat depends on the size of RAM you have. Generally hibernation is faster than regular shut down and start up.

In Windows XP hibernation is hidden and can be enabled by the following process:

Right click on your desktop->click Properties->Screen Saver->Power->Hibernate->tick Enable hibernation->Apply.

Now after enabling hibernation to hibernate instead of regular shutdown, press the Shift key when the Turn off computer option appears on screen.

Techno Enigma
Snehasis Patrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15518791023809004877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612725525435419098.post-28922120555450478252008-07-28T08:32:00.001+05:302008-08-02T17:38:17.662+05:30Beijing Olympic 2008 goes Hi-Tech

Beijing Olympic 2008 will use latest cutting edge technology for athletes, visitors, surveillance and broadcasting. The whole event will be produced and broadcasted in high-definition television with support from Panasonic. Also the live broadcast will be available on internet and text alerts and video feeds are available for mobile users. Those who miss the action don’t have to wait for repeat telecast; they can easily watch it on online video sites like YouTube. The use of Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies has broadened the surveillance network. Also China will offer 3G services during Olympics, though it will be only for Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games (BOCOG) affiliated persons who got one of the 15,000 handsets of Samsung, which Samsung (one of the sponsor of the game) gave to BOCOG and so international 3G handset users will not be able to use their handsets in Beijing.
